What Is English Cottage Design?
First of all, what style is classified as “English cottage”?
In my opinion, you don’t have to have a “cottage” style house to incorporate this beautiful style. English cottage style incorporates some or all of the following features:
- Natural Materials: The use of natural materials like stone, brick, and wood is common in English cottage design. Exposed beams, stone fireplaces, leather furniture, and other natural elements contribute to a rustic feel.
- Gardens: A classic English cottage is surrounded by well-tended gardens filled with a variety of plants and flowers. The integration of the cottage with its natural surroundings is a characteristic feature.
- Cozy Interiors: Interiors are designed to be cozy and comfortable. Exposed beams, stone fireplaces, and warm color palettes are common. Furniture tends to be comfortable and cozy contributing to a lived-in feel.
- Cottage Windows: Cottage-style homes often have small, multi-pane windows with window boxes. This not only adds to the charm but allows plenty of natural light.
- Vintage and Antique Furnishings: Furnishings in English cottage design are often chosen for their vintage or antique appeal. This adds to the sense of history and timelessness in the interior.
